初出はDayの"Law Trickes"(1608)で、「I haue playd Will with the wispe with my brother, and haue led him up and dwone the maze of good fellowship」とある。~
超自然的な火のこと。点火用の麦わらに火をつけた妖精がその正体であるともされる。ウィスプとは「雲や煙の切れ端、たいまつ」のこと。この意味は「松明のウィリアム」。
